Slugging Percentage Definition

Majors, minors, college, high school, or little league all have baseball players who need to know their stats. Baseball has been called a game of numbers because the statistics for each player and team is so important. One of the most important stats for an individual is his slugging percentage. This calculates how well he hits. Our slugging percentage calculator can help you to determine your own slugging percentage or that of your favorite player.

What is Slugging Percentage?

Slugging percentage is the result of:

  • The number of bases a player reached from hitting the ball
  • Divided by the number of times he was at bat

This number is given as a decimal.

The Information You Need to Use This Calculator

When you use our calculator to find the slugging percentage, you will need to input the number of :

  • Singles
  • Doubles
  • Triples
  • Home runs
  • At bats

How it Works

Our calculator multiplies the singles by 1 because each counts as one base. The doubles are multiplied by two since two bases are reached with a single hit. Triples are multiplied by three, and home runs are multiplied by four. All of these are added together to find the total number of bases.

The total bases number is divided by the number of at bats. This gives the slugging percentage. Base-on-balls or hit-by-pitch walks are not counted in this calculation because though those situations resulted in getting on base, they were not earned from hitting the ball.

What the Numbers Means

The higher the slugging percentage number, the more likely a player is to reach more bases with each hit. Generally, the farther a baseball is hit, the more bases the batter can reach before the ball returns into play. A high slugging percentage usually is found in power hitters who are known for hitting the ball far most of the time.

Use our slugging percentage calculator to make this calculation easier to find with the information you already have on hand.
