Net Pay Definition

Use our free Net Pay Calculator to calculate your net earnings quickly and efficiently in a matter of minutes. Your net pay is the amount of money you receive on your paycheck after all the taxes are withheld. When you use our Net Pay Calculator, the first thing to enter is your annual gross income, or the annual income before withholding of taxes, into the Annual Income box.

Enter Your Filing Status into the Filing Status Box

The filing status indicates the amount of taxes withheld from your paychecks. Select one of the following four options:

  1. Single
  2. Married Filing Jointly
  3. Married Filing Separately
  4. Head of Household

The next step is to select the appropriate option that accurately describes how often you receive your paychecks. If your employer pays you every week, select the Weekly option. If you employer pays you once a month, select the Monthly option. Enter the correct option into the Pay Frequency box.

Enter the Number of Allowances You Claim for Income Tax Purposes

If you claimed zero allowances throughout the year, more federal income taxes were withheld from your paychecks. On the other hand, if you claimed 2 or 3 allowances, less federal income taxes were withheld from the gross amounts. Enter the correct number into the Number of Allowances box.

Some States Have State Taxes

If your employer operates a business located in a state that has state taxes, you may have received paychecks with withheld state taxes. If this is the case, you need to enter the total state tax percentages that were taken out of your checks during the year.

  • Calculate the total yearly percentage of all withheld state taxes
  • Enter the annual percentage into the State Tax box

You may work in a city that imposes a special city tax on employees. If your employer withheld city taxes from your paychecks, you need to add up the total amounts and enter the percentage into the City Tax box.

After you enter correct data into each field of the Net Pay Calculator, all you need to do is click the Calculate button to find out the total net pay received for the year. Be sure to check out the rest of the financial calculators on the site!
