Materials Volume Estimator Formula:

Rectangular Volume = Width * Length * Depth
Circular Volume = pi * (radius ^ 2) * Depth

Materials Volume Estimator Definition

The materials volume estimator calculator allows several options for finding volume of solid objects. Here, the focus is on rectangular prisms and cylinders with circular areas. Calculations are offered in metric and imperial units. Be sure objects measurements and calculator settings match! Inputs for the rectangular prism are length, width and depth; labeled here as L, W and D. For circle-area cylindrical volumes, relevant inputs are depth and radius, D and R. Also, the circular-area calculation uses the value PI, often approximated as 3.14. If materials volume calculations or measurements are exceedingly precise, be forewarned that this tool is not for high-precision calculations.

Specify Area Type

The calculator allows for calculating a volume with either a rectangular or circular base. Assumptions for each base are:

1. Rectangle base

  • Material is a rectangular prism shape.
  • Volume is solid. No substantial holes or cracks in the brick-shaped material.

2. Circular

  • Circular base and constant depth (height) form a cylinder.
  • As with rectangular prism, assume solid volume with no perforations or gaps.
  • If slanted, cylinder depth is slanted at the same angle throughout circle’s circumference. No widening or narrowing of circle area from top to bottom of cylinder.

Specify Measurement Units

Inputs and results are calculated in metric and imperial units. Some notes regarding units:

  • If using metric/imperial units, make sure depth is expressed in centimeters/inches (cm/in). Length and width should be in meters/feet.
  • In circular-area calculations, the value “pi” has no units.

Rectangle-Area Calculation

Rectangular prism volumes are calculated by the formula Vrp = L x W x D.

  • Vrp = Volume of rectangular prism, in cubic meters or cubic feet
  • L = length in meters/feet
  • W = width in meters/feet
  • D = depth in centimeters/inches

Circle-Area Calculation

Circle-area cylinder-volume calculations are generated by the formula Vc = PI x D x (R^2)

  • Vc = Circular volume in cubic meters or cubic feet
  • PI = approximately 3.14, no units
  • D = depth in centimeters/inches
  • R = radius in meters/feet
