Midpoint Formula:

Midpoint = [(X1 + X2)/2 , (Y1 + Y2)/2]

Midpoint Definition

The exact middle of a line is found by using the midpoint formula. This formula is frequently used in math problems and in the real world. Once you learn how to find the midpoint with this calculator, you can use the information for several applications.

How Knowing Midpoint is Helpful

If you are trying to find the center point along a line, you need the midpoint formula. This can be useful for:

  • Calculating the center of a playing field line
  • Finding the center point on a map between two places
  • Locating the middle of a line on a graph

What This Midpoint Calculator Needs to Find the Midpoint

When you use this calculator, you need to insert four values based on the graph coordinates of the ends of the line. Be sure to use the correct coordinate for each point in each of the spots required on the calculator. Doing so will ensure that you get the correct answer. A common error is to put the second x value into the Y1 box. Double check your numbers before choosing the calculate button. The values needed for this midpoint calculator are:

  • X1
  • Y1
  • X2
  • Y2

Formula for Midpoint

The information you insert into this midpoint calculator is used in the following formula:

Midpoint = [(X1 + X2)/2 , (Y1 + Y2)/2]

This formula basically finds the average of the two x-coordinates and the average of the two y-coordinates to give you the location of the midpoint along that line.

For instance, if you have the points (1,3) and (3,1), the midpoint would be (2,2). This comes from averaging the two x-parts: 1 and 3 to find 2. This is the x-coordinate of the midpoint. The two y-coordinates are averaged to also give you 2, which is the y-coordinate of the midpoint.
