Blood Volume Definition

Blood volume is a basic measure of the total volume of blood in your body, which includes red blood cells and plasma. Height, weight and gender all play a role in determining blood volume. This calculator will help you get a general idea of how much blood is in your circulatory system. To calculate, follow these steps:

  1. Choose your gender
  2. Input your height in inches
  3. Input your weight in pounds
  4. Click “calculate” to find your blood volume

Females will generally have a lower blood volume than males, as will children and small adults. Blood volume levels can be an indicator in many diseases and conditions and can change for a variety of reasons.

Blood Volume Testing

Your doctor may want to test your blood volume if he or she suspects you may be suffering from one of the following:

  • High or low blood volume
  • High or low red cell volume
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Heart failure or impaired heart function
  • Shock
  • Kidney problems
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

Doctors may also use a blood volume test before a blood transfusion, to check fluid levels before or after a medical procedure and to evaluate blood and fluid status before kidney dialysis. Pregnancy can also affect blood volume, so it’s important that pregnant women be monitored for conditions such as anemia over the course of each trimester.

Kidneys and Blood Volume

Your kidneys are the major regulators of blood volume. As blood volume rises, the kidneys receive a hormonal signal that tells them to cut back on water absorption. This leads to a higher output of water and other blood materials through the urine, thereby decreasing blood volume. If blood volume drops too low, the kidneys will absorb more to bring it back up. Poor kidney health or kidney failure can both affect your blood volume.

Keeping Your Kidneys Healthy

Supporting kidney health helps to ensure that your blood is healthy as well. Choose fresh, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains over processed foods and cut back on your salt intake to keep your kidneys functioning properly. Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol are also important factors. If you smoke, are overweight or are largely sedentary, you may be compromising your kidneys’ ability to keep your blood volume balanced.

This calculator gives a general indication of blood volume and the results should not be used to diagnose any condition. If you experience symptoms such as fainting, fatigue or a change in blood pressure or urine output, talk to your doctor.
